Low Vision Rehabilitation
Advances in ophthalmic surgery and medical control of diseases
affecting the eye have led to a steady increase of individuals with
useful partial sight, also called low vision.
Low vision is expressed through many types of visual symptoms.
A person's ability to function visually does not always depend
on the ability to see an eye chart. Vision is a complex sense
made up of acuity (sharpness of detail), color sense, ability
to see contrasts and to evaluate the location of objects in
space.

Helping people overcome visual limitations is the work of specialized
professionals. Doctors who specialize in low vision care evaluate
the degree of usable vision and prescribe the most advanced optical
devices available. Trained instructors then work with individuals
to help them adapt to these devices. People with impaired vision
can also learn new strategies for daily activities, mobility, and
work, so they can live more independently.
