LIST OF SERVICES & PROCEDURES

Raleigh Ophthalmology provides general eye examinations as well as treatment for existing eye conditions. Visual Acuity, or the accuracy of the eye to focus, is obtained by testing both eyes indivually.

The distance vision is the smallest line of text or symbols that can be read on the eye chart at the equivalency of 20 feet. It is usually recorded as 20/__ the second number being the lowest number line the patient can read clearly.

Near vision is tested by having the patient read a vision card which is held at a distance of 14 inches. The smallest line the patient is able to read is the near vision. It is recorded as 20/__

So that your doctor can better see into the inside of your eye we place a few drops of fluid that dilates your eyes. It takes about 15-30 minutes for the drops to work. This provides for better visualization of the retina (the inside back part of your eye). Vision will be blurry, especially near vision, and will return to normal after the medication wears off.

Your doctor examines the retina, optic nerve, blood vessels and posterior structures of the eye with an indirect ophthalmoscope and a hand held lens. Sometimes the retina may be examined using what is called a slit lamp. The slit lamp is an instrument that is a type of binocular microscope with a beam of light that is projected and utilized to examine your eye. Patients place their chin in the chin rest and rest their forehead against the band, with eyes open and remaining as motionless as possible.

During the general eye examination other tests may be done as necessary. A refraction may be done if the patient has a refractive disorder (near sighted, far sighted, presbyopic or has an astigmatism). This is accomplished by placing corrective lenses in front of the patient's eyes to neutralize the refractive error.

Other tests may be utilized to assist your doctor in diagnosis of your eyes. If you have any questions, please talk with your doctor. General eye exams should be done on a routine basis depending on your age and the condition of your eyes. Please discuss this with your doctor. Prevention is easier and less costly than trying to cure a problem.
